Placing Bass Traps - Not Enough Room in the Corners

Hi,

I’m planning to build bass traps using this fiberglass:
http://www.glasscellisofab.com/sheets/glass/data_sheets/OFI%2048%20FSK.pdf

However, I’m having difficulties placing them in the corners, as there is no room to put 24” wide panel in each corner.
This is the situation when I’m sitting in my mixing position,

Front-left corner is OK.
Front right corner - front wall is OK, but on right wall there is window with no room.
Back right corner – back wall is OK, but on right wall there is a closet with sliding door and I have 12” of room between corner and closet.
Back left corner – back wall is OK, but on left wall there is a door and available rook is 12” between doors and corner.

This is the list of ideas I have so far, but not sure what to do. If you guys have something better in mind please tell me.
  • Treat only one corner and put as many traps as I can on the available walls.
  • Build standard 24” wide panels place them in the corners taking up available 12” of space on “problematic” walls. This will not be simetrical.
  • Build smaller traps adjusted to available space.
  • Build some kind of lightweight “movable” traps and when not using studio, move them towards walls. For this I need to replace wooden frame with something really light and does not damage glass and tiny laminate. This one I like the best but not sure how to do it.
  • Wait for housing market in Canada to cool down and buy bigger condo.
What would be the best thing to do, and also, if you have some other ideas please let me know.

Thanks,
Ed

P.S. Please resident acoustic gurus, want to hear your opinion too.

hi, i'm not an expert but i was in the same situation.

first of all, and most important, just place your desk and speakers so that you are facing the shortest wall in your room. (longest walls of the room are to your left and right.)

then build your bass traps for behind the speakers and install them, ceiling to floor. (i recommend using 3.5" or 5.5 " cotton for the traps, with a light frame to hold it together.)

then see how it sounds. like it yet? you will notice the biggest improvement at this point.

if you desire more bass trapping, build 3 or so bass traps for the back wall behind your listening position.

then analyze your situation and decide if it's worth it to build traps in those corners that you would have to move.

This is the most common way done by our customers. They just put them on stands and straddle the corner.

This would be the 2nd option that would not work as well as stands but will still work pretty darn well.

Both things Glenn posted are definitely viable options, 100% better than not doing anything at all. Also remember that there are other corners, not just the ones where the walls meet, plus the back wall, the reflection points, etc. You can use bass trapping in *all* of those locations. If you can't attack the corners, then attack the room via surface area.

The point is, treat the room you have, not the room you don't. If you can't get the first priority areas, get the second, third and fourth. Even if it isn't perfect it'll be much, much better than doing nothing.
