Could you hrlp with my placement?

Hi Guys,

Over the last couple of days I have built 4 absorbers consiting of two pieces of 100mm Rocksil RS60 per panel, backed with a frame and covered with fabric from IKEA (total depth over 8"inches)
I have just lugged them up the stairs to my studio and am conflicted as to where to put them.

I know that 1 in each corner would be recommended.

My room is 20 foot long
My monitors are 8ft from the door
These fire down the rest of the room which is 12 foot

Do I need to put the aborbers in thee corners by the door? This is the main thing I can't decide on, because my speakers are pointing away from these corners.

I considered putting them behind the speakers a couple of feet instead. I believe they are definitely needed in the corners behind my head (all four are in one corner in the photos below)

I would like to place them at the first reflection points but the due to the sloping roof, and my 3 sets of monitors I don't think I'd be able to get past them to get to my mix position!

So my main options I think are:

a)1 in each corner
b)2 behind the mix position, 2 placed behind the monitors

BTW this is the first step of my treatment plan.

Next, is hopefully a cloud above my head, a thinner panel attached to the sloping roof behind the mix position and some diffusion on the right hand side to match that of the window on the left.

I'd like to thank everybody so far who has contributed to threads on here and inspired me (with extremely limited DIY knowledge) to give it a go.
The hardest thing was trying to find the insulation company's HQ without Sat Nav!

Would very much appreciate your thoughts and suggestions,

Iwan

you should not have any kind of backing (wood) on the panels. It needs to be open to let sound through.

Hi Glenn,

My mistake, I didn't explain the design fully. The back is open, all I have done is build a sort of picture frame the same size as the Rocksilk.

What I am having trouble understanding is the importance of putting traps by the door. The monitors are 8 foot away and pointing in the opposite direction.

What am I misunderstanding here?

You might want to try and face the front wall, reverse your possition and move a bit closer to the door.

Why move? At the moment my speakers are at the only place of wall symmetry in the room. That is, due to there being two velux windows on the left side (from mix pos) the speakers are placed in the gap between the windows so that there is wall/plaster either side of both speakers.

Also I thought Firing down a room was the idea?

If you look at the pics you can see what I mean by symmetry

I am wondering if it would be best to move my whole setup to the back end of the room (pic 2 post 2) firing towards the door. I could still have the traps in the corners there, and place a couple more behind the monitors there as well.

I think your orientation is fine if it provides the best symmetry at the mix position, but that room may be tough in general because of the shape. You're sitting right up at the peak of the gable, so that means you've got maybe half the volume of a rectangular room with similar dimensions. You need to treat along the peak of the ceiling, but if you do that you probably won't have enough space to sit at the listening position.

I think all you can really do is treat the back wall, corners and reflection points as well as you can. If you're planning to build more panels, I wouldn't bother with anything less than 4" throughout the room. Try to treat the angled ceiling at the listening position if you possibly can.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for your help. I know its not an ideal room acoustic wise. I just want to improve it as much as I can.

The peak is 2.51 metres, about 8.25 feet high. treating this would still leave me with enough space at the mix position.

Thing is, I am getting decent results already. Maybe I have tuned myself to the room!

I think I will move things around after I finish my current project. At least I will do some listening tests. At the moment my setup is right in the middle of the room , if i flip it so that it is firing towards the door from the back wall 38% I should avoid all windows on either side and open the room out a bit, whereby I can position more standing traps. At the moment I don't have the space to be able to do this.
