Thread Starter | Varying the RT60 of a concert hall or large live room
As part of my college studies I need to design a mechanical system which will answer a problem. Here is the idea: I know that "X" reverberation time for a full Orchestra might not be optimal for quartet or solo piano work. I was thinking about a permanent device which will be mounted on the ceiling and will be motor driven. Lets say the "natural" decay time of a large hall is 3 seconds. When the absorbent side of the system will be facing the hall the decay time will be lowered significantly. When the reflective part of the system will be facing the hall it will be "normal mode" offering again 3 seconds back. Using remote control, mathematical models & measurement system it will be optional to reveal only part of the absorbers and "digitally" control the reverberation time within lets say +- 0.2 seconds. Financial costs aside, Think about large live rooms in studios, Forget about portable Gobo's,change the entire room with a press of a button. ![]() Also if anyone has a "problem" regarding the field of studio, acoustics or sound which its solution requires the field of Mechatronics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (electronics and mechanics) I will be happy to heard about it. It is preferred that the solution to the "problem" will that of a dynamic nature- Require constant measurement and adaptation of the system.

This has been done in the past, check books from Kuttruff, Barron etc... RPG has some products on this matter I think and they have an electroacoustic device to simulate reflections in an auditorium RPG Diffusor Systems

I have re-read your post again and I find several problems on your approach.. 1) a difference of 0.2 s in the RT60 in a concert hall is nothing meaningful 2) reflection in the ceiling is actually useful in a concert hall to direct sound to the audience (one can use also diffusers or weird shapes like RPG Bicubic). So you have to conceal that with the variable acoustics panels you want to install. |
