Rock Wool safety

Is it safe to leave the back of a bass trap made with rock wool uncovered? Are there any health issues?

Thanx, D

You would be fine doing it that way. Just so you don't BEAT on it with a BAT none of the partials will get into the air. Even if some did get into the air it would not hurt you. See the following thread on the matter.

RECORDING Exposing the Myths of Fiberglass - Folks, People have heard all kinds of stories about fiberglass and it's hazzards. It has been stated: [quote:2c917e7e71] I mean that cutting fiberglass can be a bit of a health hazard because the fibers, w

This is much like the Beryllium discussion. That something is not a carcinogen does not mean it is safe.

I think there's a risk if you inhale fiberglass of a chronic asthma-like condition. Something that is an irritant but cannot be expelled from the lungs is going to sit there irritating you for the rest of your life...which could be shortened by the condition.

Chronic Beryllium Disease is not cancer; it's an allergy that cannot be cured as the beryllium particles cannot be removed. Lung transplants are not available to my knowledge.

So a study that says "this is not a carcinogen" should NOT be interpreted as a statement that "this substance is safe."

That said, I have not personally read any studies which say one way or the other about the safety of fiberglass...but I treat it more or less like it was asbestos when handling it just to be especially safe. I have many of these panels in my room, but I have never made any myself.

Reason why wearing a mask is a must when building them.

Sounds good. I'll limit the beating of the finished product to feathers and lint. And I'll take precautions when building them.

Thanx all.
