Ideal starting room dimensions for home studio.

moving from apartment into renting out a 2 bedroom home. Im going to find a place where i can dedicate one of the rooms for mixing/tracking (my own music) and treat that room with a roomkit (2000 is the budget)before i go and hook up all my equipment.

what would be ideal as far as room shape/windows/ceiling height etc.. im going to pick the place based on the studio room alone and probobly just sleep in the smaller room .

You may want to list the rooms you have to work with as shape and size are very important, but also things like location of doors and things can play into deciding.
Also if you are planning on purchasing a room kit you may want to contact the company to get one on one acoustic advice from them. I know companies like ourselves can cover more then what is on the forums.

Things to look for:

- Non square
- NOT a low ceiling, 8' or more is preferable
- Something that you can fire down the long dimension of the room and have left to right symmetry in front of you.
- Something you can close off from other portions of the house
- If you're on a relatively busy/loud street, preferably something on the other side of the house.
- Something not too narrow so your monitors aren't slammed right against the side walls.

Just a few general thoughts. As Glenn said, if you can give us an idea of what rooms you have to work with, that would help a lot.

You already got good advice, and I'll add that any room you can setup as shown in the article How to set up a room will be usable.

Wish i had more information to give you but i havent actually started looking at homes yet, going to start early next week. There are lots and lots in my area and price range to look at, so hopefully i can find something.

So to paraphrase what you guys are saying, Ideal would be a Rectangular room that isint to narrow with a high ceiling?

the room im in now has a sloped ceiling, does that offer any benefit since its not exactly parallel with the floor or should i just look for a high flat ceiling at the new place?

Thanks guys, this forum has been a huge help for me

yes but the slope has to starting in the front of the room (where the mix is) and slope up to the back. Honestly it is good to have but don't put it on the "MOST HAVE" list. Look for rectangular, big and you can set up the treatment symmetrical.
