superchunk questions

Hey all,

I recently made a bunch of broadband absorption panels for my live room. They are 4" thick, and spaced about 1.5 inches from wall (which I later plan to augment to 4" of space), and made from Roxul RHT40 mineral wool. The room is built on the 2nd floor of a garage. These panels have made the room sound considerably better. However, used as a rehearsal space, the room seems to be incredibly "boomy", so I want to make some bass traps.

I've read that with superchunk-style traps, a less dense material is often preferred, depending on the thickness of the trap.

If I were to use the RHT40 to make superchunk traps, what would the ideal dimensions be? The density is 3.5 lbs/cubic foot.

I would be putting them in wall-ceiling corners mostly, as two of the wall-wall corners have limited surface area due to nearby doors, and a third is occupied by a stack of 2'x2'x2" Auralex wedge foam panels.

What would be the ideal mounting method for such wall-ceiling traps?

Here is a link to the RHT40 specs:

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

C

thanks for the quick reply. I want to put them in the 2 wall-to-wall corners with limited space, as well. In those corners, there is a door roughly 12-15 inches from the corner, so that would limit the size of the superchunks in those locations, probably making them closer to the size of an auralex lenrd-type trap. Would that be too small to be effective?

Having something there is better then nothing. Impossible to tell you how well it will do without lab testing. Part of the fun of DYIing.

Any pointers I should consider when building frames to seat my super chunk traps?

I'm cutting 3.5lb Roxul (Safe n' Sound) into 2' triangles (4 per sheet) and stacking them.

I'm going to build frames that are made of wood so it's easy to fasten fabric around the traps.

On each of the 3 corners, there will be a few small, opposing strips of wood.

something like: /\ on each corner.

At the floor and ceiling, there will be 2' plywood triangle that the strips are attached to.

Anything I'm missing? thx

Just wondering if you found a way to frame the superchunks that you like... I'm looking at hanging superchunks in the wall/ ceiling corners and I'm wondering what the most effective way to hang/ frame them is...

I decided against the superchunks for those corners. I'm just going to use 4" or 6" panels to straddle them. Still have to figure out how I'm going to do that, actually.

If you go to my company website there is a BORING video of mounting in the wall to wall corner. You can pretty much do the same thing for the wall to wall corners, but you would need to add two hooks.

hmmm.. me no findy video... ?

EDIT: found the video thumbsup

On a side note, do the panel corners need to actually be touching the walls when mounted in this fashion?

It is good to have them as close as possible.
