vaulted ceiling reflection reduction advice requested hello selfless advice givers, thanks for all that you do here! I have a vaulted ceiling in my studio, which is a converted garage. Its fully drywalled everywhere, with plaster on top of that. My floor is carpet over pad over concrete. I have some pretty annoying flutter echos coming from the ceiling, so I've built some 1" thick 2' x 4' panels, out of UltraTouch insulation. I will address bass trapping later for the side walls, right now I'm just trying to deaden reflections. They will be hanging about 3" from the actual surface. Dims are 14' at the peak, and about 11' x 16' for the shape. My question is, should the 6 panels I have made mirror each other, for symmetry? Or be staggered for asymmetry? I put one up, and its already helping.

What is the room? Control or tracking? What design concept if control? If tracking, symmetry is not important, other than where do want the objectionable echo to be? Why are you not doing bass trapping in the ceiling? Bass traps in/on the walls will reduce the area of the room. In the ceiling it will reduce nothing of significance. Andre

it's an editing room mostly, I track virtually nothing. I'd like to mix, so I want better accuracy. I'm not actually trying to bass trap in the ceiling, just kill reflections. Its "pingy" up there. I'll deal with bass management later, I just don't have time to deal with everything simultaneously.

IOW it may save you money and room area to build bass absorption into the ceiling now. Andre | ||

cool, thanks guys. The panels I made are being mounted with simple hook and eyes, so swapping them out will be easy if it seems I need more substantial traps way up there. cheers!
