Question Questions about mounting basstraps in corner

I am halfway done building 4 of my 4" basstraps (pics soon). I plan to straddle them over each corner of my room. I know that covering two walls and the ceiling is preferred and this leads to my questions:
  1. When mounting the trap, should I actually touch the ceiling with the trap or does it work just as well to be a couple inches off?
  2. Since I'm mounting it over the corner, is it still imperative to mount it off the walls a few inches or will the gap behind the trap suffice?

Also, if anyone has suggestions on good mounting hardware/ideas for corner-mounted traps - please advise. Ready Acoustics has this mount, but $12 a piece seems a bit steep for a (low) budget DIY project.

Thanks

If the panel is parallel to the wall, then you should mount it a few inches away from the wall. If the panel is straddling the corners, then you're all set.

What kind of frames do you have in your panels? Picture hanging wire and eyehooks or D-rings can work well for corner mounting....

As JWL said you want to mount it off the wall when flat mounting, but when straddling it is best to have the sides of the panel touching the wall, ceiling or floor depending on how you are mounting it.

@jwl: I've attached a picture of one of the (yet-to-be-covered) traps.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll try to mount it touching the ceiling. It's good to know I don't need to mount if off the wall any further...my room's not that big

I'm getting ready to mount my corner traps now (same as above). My question is how to get behind them to do this. I have in each corner 2 2X4 traps to stack and straddle from floor to ceiling. How do I get behind it to hook it to the wall? If I put the top one on first, there just isn't any room to work behind it. I'm sure you guys are full of good ideas and I appreciate any advice, I've never done this before. Video would be awesome if someone could point me to one.

Nevermind, ended up putting hooks on the outside top edges. Wanted to have them hidden behind it, but couldn't figure out a way to make it work.

Here is a LAME video I made mounting in corner. You can do the same with 4 eye hooks in upper corner.

Thanks Glenn, but the problem I had was that I was butting it to the ceiling and had no way to get behind the panel. That's why I ended up putting the hooks on the outside and putting foam strips along the sides (decorative use so you wouldn't see the hooks) Looks good though

Glenn, I have some GIK panels (244) angled between the ceiling and the side wall. I attached them so that the panels are touching the wall but there is an air gap of around 1.5 inches between the panel and the ceiling.

How much "efficiency" am I losing here? Are the panels totally useless for bass frequencies this way?
