Hey Ethan.. Glenn... read me please

Another quickie.......

I know its generally a HUGE NO NO to mix on headphones BUT if you HAD to pick a pair 4 reference, which in you guys opinion would be the best solution for mixing w/ the flattest frequency?

AND ...

Should I get the aurelex Mopads?? ... I have nothing in this garage but Moving Blankets... so until I get enough extra $$$ to invest in a room kit these will have to do.

Do you have a budget in mind? Our suggestions could run anywhere from $300 to $2,000, so a budget will help narrow it down.

Down the road, sure look at something like the Mopads. But starting out I would would put your money into bass traps and panels for early reflections.

I could do $300 but I don't think that would do any justice in my 25X25 garage. The moving blankets killed the "garage sound"...

UNLESS... maybe $300 in bass traps would help?

I still have to get the PVB from realtraps ...(couple of weeks).

And also I've been thinking about just mixing on headphones (flattest pair I can find) ... I don't record or mix any instruments...just voice, but if the experts say the acoustics are needed ... then I can invest. I did do a room analysis on Aurelex a while back but the total came up to about $2,750...wow lol.

My monitors aren't the best in the world either, currently the Alesis 520 M1 Active's but they have compensation switches on the back for acoustical problems.

if it's a 25x25 room, then you aren't in as dire need for bass traps as someone with, say, a 10x12 room. Don't get me wrong, all rooms benefit from bass trapping, but the problems won't be as severe.

I'd start by creating a Reflection-Free Zone, using your blankets etc., as described here: RealTraps - Creating a Reflection-Free Zone

Then, as you can add bass trapping to the room until you are happy with the way it sounds.

While I agree that $300 is going to be tough to deal with a 25x25 room, DIY is a viable option assuming 703 or Mineral Wool is available in your area.

Also, I'd respectfully disagree that a 25x25 room is in less need of bass control than a 10x12. Early reflections will be 'longer' and 'farther away' in the large room but the modes will be lower and they'll be 100% overlapped and much harder to deal with - and at the same time MORE in need of being dealt with.

If you're really tight on cash and are eventually going to buy treatment and can't DIY, go to Home Depot or Lowes or wherever and buy some rolls of insulation and stack them up in your corners and in the middle of the wall behind you. Keep the receipt and return them when you buy finished treatments. They're not perfect but will do a pretty good job if you can get by the look.

Good point, bpape. Clearly bass trapping will help even in a larger room. But I still say all else being equal I'd rather listen in a 25x25 room than a 10x12. Hopefully the rooms are treated....

What?? Nobody said that they would rather listen in a 10x12 foot room over a 25x25 foot room. Bryan's point was

Bryan's point is you would need bass trapping in either room just as quick and the early reflections are MUCH stranger in 10x12 foot room. So in the 25x25 foot room you should put bass trapping in first. Well you need both but....................
