Never saw that site before. How did you hear about them? Are they new? Do you know the people? Who are they?

Something about that web site seems strangely familiar.

Yes. Look for industrial suppliers, heating, and refrigeration, not construction.

First to be clear, 705 isn't cheap. But you have good advice above on where to find it at market prices... SPI is definitely a good place to go.

You want to avoid paying shipping if you can. See if there is a local SPI branch near you.

buying Owens Corning in Australia?

I've finally decided to make the jump to monitoring properly! Moved my whole room about on the weekend (so that it matches up with the diagrams on websites (you know 0.38 of the longwall, more or less centred along the short, equilateral triangle etc etc), and while i've found the stereo image is better than the position i was in before the bass is definetely reduced.

Anyway.. long story short - i need to create some bass traps, but finding Owens Corning stuff in Australia doesn't seem to be so easy from the brief checks i've done - there are certainly no online links...

Do any aussies know if there's anywhere to buy OC705 or OC703 in australia? Googling is proving pretty useless.

If not, what would be a material/manufacturer worth pursuing. I was more or less thinking 2x 6" 705 traps in the corners behind the monitors (cojo size) and then 2x4" 703 for the early reflections (and i guess i'd have a spare third one that i could throw somewhere, based on how 703/5 is packaged) - this was being limited to that many panels as well.. i'm working with a non-existent budget :D

But all that's a little bit useless when there's nowhere to purchase from

I also see the stupid insulation that they have at school and wonder who the hell had that idea (solid 1cm thick plywood backing with about 2cm of mineral wool and material over the top) - I think it's trying to 'look studio'.
It doesn't do anything much useful - cuts down relection a bit, but there's no bass trapping whatsoever anywhere - which makes mixing on expensive gear (a Neve 88D being onesuch desk) like stabbing in the dark - up until moving my gear around in my room i could monitor bass and subs with more accuracy than any of the setups at school.

Thanks guys!

EDIT: On doing a little more research i found found this - it looks like the 650 would be roughly the same density as the 705, but this stuff doesn't really come with frequency dampening curves...

The 350 is listed as having an NRC of 0.71 at 25mm and 0.93 at 50mm - but it doesn't have any info that isn't averaged. The 650 actually measures worse at 25mm and only slightly better (0.97) at 50mm - the 450 seems to be the best at 0.98 for 50mm

There's also this stuff which does have its acoustical properties listedm and for bass it looks -well - crap!

looking at this PDF (sorry for the download), it looks like things are getting closer to the money (not that i've any idea what they might charge), but figures aren't given for frequencies lower than 250Hz (kinda like when having earplugs moulded e)

Sorry about the wall of text. Did a fair bit of research/googling while waiting for PT7.4 to download and update my 003s firware :D
Would rockwool be the best alternative to 703/5?

Me Too!

'cept I'm in New Zealand. I think I've seen similar products in lagging on hot pipes etc... I cant seem to find an equivalent product to the OC703/705 or Rockwool here. I guess I need to get specs. on them all and send them out to local insulation co's. I'm moving into a large space with polished wood floors and high ceilings. Only problem is exposed RSJ's or big steel "I" beams and bloody tin roof. I'll need to make lots of ceiling clouds.

NRC

I've found some pre made panels with NRC result of 0.79 but the problem with NRC is its really only for frequencies relating to speech. It gives the average result of testing at 250,500,1000 and 2000 Hz. They also dont tell you how they are mounting the product at the time of testing. Is there another way of knowing if a certain product will work in a recording studio environment?

wool that's not from sheep, in New Zealand?

One link I didn't post the other day (maybe stupidly) is this. They call it High Density Glasswool, and the densities are the same as FOC703 (48kg/m3) and 705 (96kg/m3) - could this be OC under a different name?
