Two Ceiling Cloud Questions

I have two 2' X 4' two-inch-thick rigid fiberglass panels that I want to hang from my studio ceiling to reduce first reflections. They will be placed side by side to form a square 4' X 4' panel. I have two questions:

(1) How low should they hang from the ceiling? (The ceiling is 9' high.)

(2) Generally speaking, the cloud should hang above the area between my speakers and my seated position (i.e., my head), correct? So, if my speakers are 4' in front of me, the center of the cloud (a 4' square area) should roughly be 2' in front of me (and 2' away from the speakers), correct? (Please don't ask me to do the "mirror" thing.)

Any help would be appreciated.

1) Generally traps are hung with an air-gap the same width as the thickness of the panel - 2" in this case.

2) If your head is the same height as your speakers, then the reflection point will be half way between your speakers and you. But it will be along the imaginary line straight from the speaker to you, not directly in front of you. So make sure you get this spot.

Short of the mirror trick (I can't imagine why this is a problem with a 9' ceiling.... ) you can use simple geometry to figure it out. Remember the angle of reflection will be the same as the angle of incidence for the sound. Take into account any differing heights between the tweeter and your ear.

But as Jason says, if they are at the same height (which they probably should be) then it's halfway between.

Substitute for the mirror trick: Get a little super bouncy ball. Throw it against the ceiling fast enough that the angle doesn't change. If it comes close to your speakers then that area needs to be covered.

PS. The above is a bit of a joke, but will help you visualize it, and if you go through with it, I'm not responsible... I do get a kick out of the image of an acoustician going into a studio and throwing a super bouncy ball around.
