DIY Standmounted Gobo/half Vocal Booth Help needed

I have been thinking about how to build a cheap homemade version that does a similar job to this standmounted gobo by SE.





Now of course theirs is quite complex and high-end. If I could figure out something that works half as well that I could build that would be great. Especially because the ribbons pick up a lot of the room being figure 8. I really don't care if they look good. What kind of materials would you use to make a simple version of this?
