I finally finished and installed my Ultratouch cloud over my drumkit.

Just built a 5'x6' frame out of 1x5's, attached chickenwire, stapled burlap over that, sprayed with FireStop, laid R19 in and mounted the whole thing on the ceiling above the kit.

No objective testing but its very noticeable how much clearer and crisper my cymbals and drums in general are in the overheads.

Have you used that on Ultratouch Cotton? I just don't believe it would work on ultratouch unless someone has actually used it on ultratouch.

Just Imagine trying to cut a dense 8" thick cottonball with strings and jean material mixed in. Everytime you hit a string or jean material you end up tearing all of the cotton around it.

Hello everyone, I've been lurking here for like ten years! Now I'm completing my studio build here in France and I'm using Isoa cotton insulation. I followed the manufacturers recomendation and used one of these to cut the insulation which I bought in 2 inch and also 8inch thickness:

It's a disc cutter with a 9" blade which I had already bought for house renovation. It works a treat and cuts really fast, no more frustrated hacking with a knife!

I've made 34" face corner chunks and am making 2 inch panel traps. I'll post up some pics when I get a chance.

Cheers
Driller

PS I think you'll find my absorber design rather novel

I used a regular circular saw with a plywood blade to cut my Ultratouch. It worked just fine. Pop a chaulk line on both sides, cut first side then turn over and cut again. Pull apart. The secret is to hold the saw over the stuff so it doesn't compress the insulation.

Driller, you saved me SO much work with that recommendation of a disc cutter. It worked so well!

Best $49 bucks I ever spent on a project, thanks!

How much of the r20 and/or r30 would I need to make some decent bass traps?

I see on the website that 10 pieces of 8"x24"x48" (r30) is about $135. Would one of these make a comparatively effective bass trap (to 703)? If so that is WAY more cost effective than 703 or mineral wool.

Will I be cutting myself short with this stuff as apposed to 703?

Rather than starting my own thread with a similar topic, could Ethan, Glenn or someone shed some light on natural wool insulation?

The R-rating's I have access to are R2.2 (95mm / 3.7 inches thick) to R3.6 (150mm / 5.9 inches thick) - would this be suitable for bass traps, or is the density likely to be lacking compared to fibreglass?

Lightbulb

You can increase the density of fluffy insulation simply by packing it to be thinner. A good amount to aim for is three to one, so 12 inch thick fiberglass packed to 4 inches thick works about the same as 4 inch thick rigid fiberglass.

According to these test results, Ultratouch 5.5" is doing 0.97 at 125hz compared to 4" Ridged Fiberglass at 0.84.

Bonded Logic Inc's UltraTouch Cotton

PRODUCT THICKNESS DENSITY MOUNTING 125HZ 250HZ 500HZ 1000HZ 2000HZ 4000HZ NRC
R-13 3.5" (mm) A 0.95 1.30 1.19 1.08 1.02 1.00 1.15
R-19 5.5" (mm) A 0.97 1.37 1.23 1.05 1.00 1.01 1.15

So, if this is the case, then 8" sounds really juicy on my end. And correct me if I'm wrong, but if you buy R30 sized at 8x24x48, no cutting will be needed at all if that is the same size of your traps?

I was researching Ultratouch, and found this thread... since that product pic is no longer loading, I did some reverse-URL-engineering and found the disc cutter you were talking about here:

Thought that might save someone else the trouble!

cheers,

There shouldn't be any difficulty with the design of panels or corner traps.

You build them as one always has and simply employ chicken wire, hardware cloth or plastic orchard/fruit tree bird netting stapled to the frame to support the fill.
