hi chris_m,
here in cologne there is one, having the flex cl in stock.
(baukraft.)
i will be there tomorrow and decide which thickness to buy..
or maybe i will take pavatherm.
very high density, 160 kg/cbm.
anyone heard of this?

i would like to use them as broadband absorbers, not just for the bass..

all the best

I measured absorption (-1 dB) even down to 100 Hz, with 6cm thickness of the Thermohanf, placed directly on wall (e.g. 2 pieces 180x62,5cm), in this case behind the speakers. Trying lots of positions result in different absorption effects, even with changing the position only for some centimeters.

I went for 14cm of flexCl for my broadband-panels. That is quite a lot, but i wanted to make sure, to go as deep as possible, as i have a rather small room and some serious problems. I think you can also have good results with 8-12cm or even less, always depending on the frequency-range you want to treat.

FlexCl is a nice and save material, which is also used by professional studio builders. It's great for broadband-absorbers and for the early-reflection points, but if you want to reach the really low frequencies you still need tuned absorbers, maybe something like the resonance absorbers from MB-Akustik. Unfortunately flexCl is not quite as cheap as mineral wool.. No it'S NOT!

Good luck for you DIY-adventure. Mine was MUCH (!!) more work, than i expected, but i'm happy with the results and a solution from a professional company would have been much more expensive. I tried to make mine look as nice as i could, so we couldn't work as fast as we planned. I can only recommend you to make good plans before (!) you start, to take time and to have somebody help you.

thanks for the advice!

how do you build the absorbers?
is flex cl very heavy?
and how long did it took to build all or one?

i did not get there to buy, too much to do.. but i will the next days (or weeks. hopefully not months..)
i´m thinking if i want to build big absorbers and i let them stand on the floor or some smaller ones and hanging them on the walls.
maybe on the floor would be much better (?), but also would make the room seem even smaller...

anybody ever tried to compare thermo hanf to flex cl?
the technical papers speak for flex cl.. more dense, higer strömungswiederstand...

oh man, so much to consider..

FlexCl is quite heavy! I've build 8 large broadbandabsorbers (1,85m*0,65m* 0,15m) and the became so heavy (maybe 30kg) that i didn't want to hang them and so i putted them on litlle wodden blocks as stands.

Concerning he build, i just bought the chepest wood at "Bauhaus" for the frame, then i drilled holes in the sides (i don't remember the exact number, but i think it about 250 holes with a diameter of 11 or 12cm) which took FOREVER (2 days?) and was a shitty job because we destroyed 3 of these large drillheads, then i build the frames, putted the flexCl in, streched fabric (Ikea) around the frames and mounted the little wodden blocks.

I'm not a craftsman, but i had the help of one. Nonetheless and because the ok but not great tools we used the whole building process took 4-5 days, including buying all the stuff, buying new tools when we broke them (3 times) and finishing everything!

Lots of work and i think i've spend about 500€ on these 8 absorbers, but now i'm happy and i don't look back! But doing it alone, I would have gone mad.

You can find lots of info about building absorbers HERE

Good Luck!
