Rigid Fibreglass, London, Uk.

Sorry if this has been visited before, but the forum search isn't letting me search for the word (well, ackronym) 'UK'

Are there any alternative products/dealers for the type of stuff required for the likes of Cojo's sticky thread/Ethan's FAQ etc.???

Cheers all.

you don't tend to get rigid fibreglass in the UK .....well I've never seen it. The UK 'equivalent' is rockwool, what you want is rockwool RW3 - which is 'about the same' as 703.

In the uk you can get it from Travis Perkins (they will claim not to know anything about it but eventually they will give in and sell you some). Alternatively you can get it from Studiospares (just near staples corner) - they always have it in stock. IIRC the price from studiospares isn't too bad ?

Travis perkins is a builders merchant www.travisperkins.co.uk branches everywhere - can't remember the price offhand but give them a call. Also mention that you're trade and can they give you a better price

or Studiospares - pro audio and recording equipment - prices on the website

try these people

Insulation prices, Celotex, Thinsulex, Gyproc, Actis, more

Rocksilk Universal Slab RS60 - another 703 type equivilent.

it seems cheaper to buy a bunch of 25mm sheets rather than say 50mm or 100mm thick.

Is it okay to layer them within the wooden frames?

hi,

I bought a bag of 8 50mm RW3 slabs from ORION TRENT for £18. same price for 4 in 100mm size. Great deal, and that was for just one bag so if you wanted in any kind of bulk you could talk the price down.

cheers kedbear,

that sounds like the one to go for. Studiospares are charging £34.90 for that amount and Travis Perkins I think was roughly the same (although on the phone my head began to melt with all the metres squared etc. prices)

i'm checking their site now.

I think there's a thread over at Sound on Sound about the stuff in green bags from Wickes being good as well as cheap. I'd check it out for yourself rather than taking my word for it though.

Sound On Sound Forum

cheers richard found that.

people on there are saying that it's 45 kg per metre cubed as opposed to Rockwool/Rocksilk's 60 kg. Is that enough does anyone know?

(i think i'm using some of your samples actually, thanks!)

45kg/m3 will be fine - IIRC 703 is 48kg/m3

more info here

http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm

I think there is some debate as to wether the slightly denser stuff can 'perform' slightly worse in certain circumstances.

I would suggest that factors such as panel design and placement will have a greater impact on the end result.

As in everything in life - there's no need to get to anal about the numbers. It's more important to do it than spend time worrying about it.

PS - you haven't actually said what you want it for - bass traps - cavity sound insulation (space damping?!?) - first reflection damping etc etc.

owens/corning floor slab is very similar but not the right size for making large panels. we import all our raw material from the US as its not possible to get the same size sheets here.

If you want 45KG you can get R45 from Orion Trent 8 slabs 50mm £14.50, same for 4 of 100mm. The stuff from Wickes, if it is 45Kg is around £40 for 8. Find the nearest Orion Trent stockist, you'll save alot.

The closest rock wool equivilent to 703 that is available in the UK is
RWA45, but I could only find it in 1000 x 600 sheets.
I found the Rocksil equivent to 703 - RS45 in 600 x 1200 x 100 mm sheets x 10 sheets for under £20 by calling the manf Knauf and getting a local stockist's number...

My order arrives tues.....

Just received my order of Rocksilk from Custom Audio designs (here in the UK) to soundproof my Log cabin which starts being built tomorrow ... (can't wait!).

First off - I am not affiliated in any way with Custom Audio, but I would highly recommend them to anybody. They are very knowledgeable and very helpful (even pointing out that I would be wasting my money going the extra mile with one of their products!!).

When I did the maths - the equivalent in Wickes was MORE expensive than this acoustic mineral fibre which would appear to be better as well, so it was a no-brainer.

Have a look here: Acoustic mineral wool slabs UK - dense fibre matting DFM

Once it is all installed, I will post my findings as to how effective it is.

these guys charge ridiculous for the delivery! £29.50 for delivery, £17 for 1 pack of Rockilk RS60! delivery costs more than the product!

anyone know any cheap dealers of Rocksilk RS60 or Rockwool RW3 in the UK?

For UK suppliers these folk are pretty good...

Soundproofing and Noise Consultants - Custom Audio Designs Ltd Hampshire

I actually had a problem when I took my delivery but they were pretty good at sorting things out (It wasn't their fault either).

They can get any sort of rockwool you can think of - from light and fluffy right up to 200Kg/sqm.

Knowledgeable people too. They seem to talk our language - unlike the average builders suppliers.

Don't be put off if a supplier is located a long way from you - Its no more difficult to transport insulation 200 miles than 10 miles. Distance is not the problem!

Rigid Insulation

There are products available in the EU. They are generally to be found in Industrial outlets. These boards are used to quieten HVAC plant and in particular Ducts.
RockSilk RS100 is rigid and easy to work with. Equivalent to 705 but less prickly.
RS60 should be about 703 territory but fairly floppy.
Isover High Performance Duct Slab is a fairly rigid Fibreglass panel. Similar to 703 or slightly denser I would guess.

Been using the company 'dobuild' on ebay. Not the cheapest but they deliver free and the service has been absolutely excellent.
