reactivating the topic: DId anyone here have a chance to test these foams by aixfoam? (new link: Absorption Products Sound proofing acoustic foam acoustic panels) The prices seem very low compared to similar offers, i'd like to know a bit more about the on-site performance. |

Well, one thing I like to see (personally) are the normal incidence plots that result in acoustic absorption tests per ASTM E1050-98. It is a very standardized test, quite repeatable, and usually (provided care is taken) reproducible as well. These are very handy data to have. Note that you will see the data often presented piece-wise. That is, two separate absorption curves versus frequency. This is because the test uses two different diameter tubes (a large and a small, around 4 and 1 inches diameter, respectively if memory serves), which is required to ensure that plane waves (not evanescent waves) are used to compute the incident and reflected signals. I would also look for data per ASTM C-423 (absorption via decay). This differs from ASTM E-1050 in a number of ways, but the biggest differences between the two methods are that in '423, the test takes place in a reverberant chamber, and thus, the incidence (unlike ASTM E1050-98) is random, that is, at multiple angles. Also, '423 relies upon the decay time in each 1:3 octave band (as compared to a bare room) to compute the absorption. I'm a data-driven guy...so I would seek out data, and use that to make an informed decision.
