Thread Starter | Help with UltraTouch Cotton Choice
I am going to build my own traps this weekend and will be making wood frames wrapped in Guilford of Maine FR701. I am picking up the insulation at a local supplier this Saturday morning. My quesiton... How much of a difference should I notice if I use R21 instead of R13. The absorption coefficients are pretty close between the two products down to 125Hz. Is the main difference going to be more effectiveness in the R21 below 125Hz? |

Yes. Thicker = lower. Also, be warned that cotton absorbers are quite floppy. I'm a big fan of cotton in acoustics, but you need to account for this when you build your absorbers if you want them to look good.

As JWL said the ultraTouch is not as rigid so you may want to make a frame for it. Glenn

Thanks a lot for the help. I will be using wooden frames to build the traps to allow for a crisp appearance instead of a couch cushion in the corner. When I use the R21, which is 5.5 inches thick, should I compress it any with the frame, or build the frame thick enough so that the cotton simply sits inside with support so it doesn't sag? I designed the frames to be open around the sides to maximize area and will probably use jute cord threaded through small holes in the frame to support the cotton. |

Just lay it in the frame. Thickness matters. Glenn |

How did this project work out, btw? I just bought some R21 ultratouch myself and am thinking through exactly how I want to get it framed and mounted. -b |
