Cubicle Sections as Acoustic Treatment

I just bought some cubicle sections at an auction for acoustic treatment. Has anyone ever thought of this or tried it out? Good idea or No...

good idea. some of them are very effective and could be used to make gobos, etc.

Agreed they should work pretty well.

There are two types of office dividers - absorbing and not absorbing. The ones that are made of wood with thin fabric are not useful as acoustic treatment, and even the ones that do absorb aren't so useful for music because they absorb only speech frequencies.

We use them at my studio as dividers and to block reflections off a few things like the piano we have stored at the back or a few of the cabinets. I do mostly voice over work but when I do record music they've worked okay to divide the room up a bit for multiple instruments. IMO its an affordable answer to some acoustic dilemmas.

I spent half of life trying to get out of a cubicle! even if they were miracle gobos I'd be too creeped out to use them. I break into a cold sweat just thinking about them...

We've got a bunch of them and have been using them for years to cut down reflections and get a bit of isolation.

Plus, their hideous colors add to the overall "vibe" of our studio.

You are correct about the wood ones, but the one without the wood are just 2" of 705 so they work just fine. Not as bass traps though.

If you use cubicle dividers in your studio, grab a coffee mug, walk up to someone who is sitting behind a divider and say:

"Listen, there's a problem with your TPS reports. We're putting cover sheets on those now. Didn't you get the memo?"

See who gets it.

Is that from Fight Club? (I know, I know, "First rule....")

The Sound of Music. No, wait, it's from Kill Bill Part 2. <G>

No, it's from Office Space. I can't think of cubicles without thinking about that movie.

I'm a desk jockey, so movies/TV about sucky office jobs are a guilty pleasure.

Ever see the British version of The Office? Ricky Gervais is so painfully funny I have to leave the room sometimes.

get it? I lived it back in my systems engineering days! i used to keep the DVD running continuously on a spare imac in the corner of my cube, right next to my red stapler...

I actually made a track called "milton's revenge" that contains a few samples from the "space."
Hands down it's the best movie of all time!

And I'm sure you were told that you could listen to the DVD at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven. <G>

I'm the guy at my job that actually had to create/build a TPS report. It's a fairly useless report and appropriately named for that very reason.
The people in the know love it.

Sometimes I.T. has it's perks.
...but most of the time I think about taking my printer out to some field with a few of "my homies."

;)
