Thread Starter | Finally going to set my room up right...
Yes, it's another one of those threads. I've done a lot of reading, and I think I'm prepared to do anything short of knocking down walls to get this room treated as well as possible, but I'd like some advice on monitor/furniture configuration before I go all out and find out it could have been better another way. Here is my current configuration plan: ![]() Ideally, I'd have the desk oriented to the western wall, but I'd prefer not to entice burglars with expensive monitors easily visible through a first story window. However, the current configuration will yield late reflections off that window. Anyway, enough of my amateur speculation - I'd greatly appreciate if some of the experts could chime in. Thank you. ![]() PS: I currently have no acoustical treatment. Oh, and the darn bed has to be shoved into a corner somewhere too. |

First thing that strikes me is you are going to be sitting in the middle of the room. You really want to be close to 38% (about 5 feet from the front wall) of the room length. Honestly I would also flip the desk so you will have better symmetry with the left a right walls in the front of the room. Besides that it is bass trapping in as many corners as possible with panels on the early reflection points. I would say that the back wall is still going to be pretty close to you so plan on 4" or more panels on the back wall.. Here is a layout that could guide you though the set up. Note these are our products but you can replace them with other panels you buy or build. ![]() Glenn

Ya I'd have to agree that you'll be much better off facing the West wall. Just get some nice heavy drapes and/or a semi opaque blind/backing for the window/plants/whatever.. Natural light and something to occasionally focus your eyes on beyond the computer screen is always nice. 2 or 3 more feet for your long dimension would've been nice but as it stands, your ratios don't suck and the room likely has the potential to sound ok with treatment. I'm not in the habit of making sketchup mockups for strangers, but the solution to your setup just seemed so logical (and satisfying because it could actually work as opposed to most of the strange ratio/asymmetrical small rooms from Hell that you often see on forums like this,) I couldn't resist. I've shown one side of the front of the room - the other side would be a mirror image in terms of treatment. The speaker/listener placement distances shown are just a theoretically good approximate starting point and may be further tweaked (by ear and measurement) for the best compromise between smoothest frequency response, stereo imaging & ergonomics. I think having thick absorbtion on the wall directly behind you will be important due both to the close proximity to the listening position, as well as on account of not having the wall (window) directly in front of you substantially treated. I LOVE YOU! ![]() I really appreciate that. And you even stuffed my computer in the closet for me - so very thoughtful. ![]() Seriously though, that looks terrific, and I can now see how a heavy curtain would work well on my west window. Thanks again! |
