I buy my rockwool from these guys

Home page

I bought a case of 703 and 705 which gave me 12 2x4 sheets in total. Went to Lowes and Home Depot, bought thin 2x4 sheets of Lauma ply wood for the backs. This enables you to hang them on walls like picture frames.

I then bought 2 cases of mineral wool, built actual frames for making gobos. Much heavier than the previous method, i am not able to hang these for it would rip sheet rock. very sturdy and will last forever unlike egg crate type foam which does nothing but dry rot and will only help with mid to high frequencies.

total cost for 24 2 inch 2'x4' broadband absorbers.....$600. Worth it. For fun I put them all in my room and it was so quiet that I could hear my heart beat. Before you consider buying the latest A/D converters for $1000-$2000 because you think that would be the biggest improvement in your chain, think again. Absorbers, Preamp, Mic, Monitors, THEN A/D converters.

Why are you using that low density stuff from the hardware store? They do not carry the industrial fibre with the ideal high density that is required for acoustic panels. You need either OC 703/704/705 or Roxul Rockboard 60 or 80 if you want pro studio sound absorption with a nice character. That low density stuff will not perform ideally.

You need to do your panels over again... unless your later pictures show a higher density rockwool replacing that low density stuff. I cannot tell.

Just call any insulation warehouse and they will have good stuff on hand... even equivalent products like fibrex or OFI. just look for proper densities - if you go with fibreglass then the density must at least 3.0 lb/cu ft. and for rockwool to be at least 6 lb per cu ft.

But if you do not like it to sound tight, and if you want to go against industry standards, and better yet - if you want it to sound "loosey goosey", then go ahead. Germany is a free country. Whatever blows your whistle! thumbsup

Super cool thread, Shaman!

I may well try taking the Ribba frame and building a poly diffusor on it... thanks for the idea!

Would this be okey to do with out the wood?

Just the felt and mineral wool and then staple them together ?

You can try this but will see soon that it won´t look very well
and the felt needs something to be stapled against
so the Ikea frames are a very good and affordable solution.

I made some large (48x24x10) broadband absorbers a few weeks ago using the same fabric mounting method. I didn't use felt - just normal fabric and it holds/looks great with OFI-48 (which is like 703).

To the OP - your studio looks amazing! I love the alternating colours and high contrast. Makes me want to re-do my wall panels (48x32x3)... In retrospect, this would've been a much more attractive way to do things (although I'd prefer 3 inches of depth... These Ikea frames are what - 1 inch deep?)

Maybe I'll use the six big panels I made for something else and redo all the walls in Ikea framing :D

I've been reading around on this forum trying to find some novel ways to get a room in decent shape for recording, and this thread definitely has me interested in trying something similar.

My only concern, as mentioned by a couple of others earlier in the thread: Will I be putting myself at health risk with the insulation? I'm not a handy guy and have never worked with the stuff before.

hello all, what fabric is everyone using for their bass traps?
i got a killer deal on some suede recently, and i thought id seen some bass traps on here before with suede, plus its a good looking fabric, but should i go with something lighter or airy-er?

thanks!
