| Is there something in particular these frames have that frames from anywhere else wouldn't, aside from an IKEA serial number? Also, has anyone tried doing this with two frames to achieve a deeper trap for more bass absorption yet? I really wanna try it out, but I'm so poor it's not even funny, so if they dont' work, it's kind of a big deal. If anyone's tried, let me know. Thanks!

| Just buy some wood in home depot it's cheaper than those frames, some sheet rock screws and you'll be fine...

| Nice thread :) Hey, this URSA mineral wool...is this flexible, rigid or semi-rigid?

| Gear Head | , these DIY project is... WOOOHOOO! Looks absolutely professional for a fraction of cost of a ACM product (sorry, Michel :). But one thing that keeps in my mind is the problem with the fibres of the mineral / glass wool. These fibres can break after a certain time period and get into the air. I think that wrapping the mineral wool pack into cellophane foil (you know, that foil you wrap your bread and butter stuff in) would keep the fibers inside. Additionally this foil is kinda self sealing when two layers of foil get contact. It is a very (!) thin foil so it won't cause much reflections. Does anybody have some frames in just-before-ready-status and could give it a try with that foil? I'm curious if the fabric keeps the form when the cellophane is between. |

| Lives for gear | Hi Does anyone know how much of a negative effect the cardboard/chipboard (wood?) backpanel will affect the sound in this design? Many thanks! Eddie

| If the panels are mounted flush onto the walls then it wouldn't hurt acoustics.. |

| Lives for gear | here's how one of mine turned out ![]() i don't think i like the fabric now it's in the frame, the background is more blue than black as i thought in the shop. they didn't have the fabric i wanted in the local ikea store, so i got this instead. the other side will be standard cream/white. yes, no symmetry for me. yes, i realise the fabric is pretty... feminine. i might make another white one soon and have symmetry either side of me, and put this somewhere else. i also noticed ikea are selling something like a 45cmx45cm frame which you can cover and hang for £3.99. might get a couple of them and hang them above the vocal recording position. it's near the fabric section and meant for mounting fabric on a wall. this was really easy.

| Lives for gear | thanks! cheers for the idea and instructions on this. i've always been put off before, but these were really easy to make. here is what the white one looks like ![]() ![]() Ihould have ironed the white fabric a bit more, i had to use double the amount so that it wasn't seethrough and this made it harder to staple in at the back and it was quite a snug fit. now the hassle of trying to put them up. i'm just going to lean them against the wall/window for the time being!

| Smaller bass traps Wow I love the designs done by Shaman. I am just about to make some bass traps and braodband absorbers and I'm definitely going in for the felt option. I have two questions, but to put it into context: I will be moving house in the next year and dont want to rebuild my panels and bass traps (I will probably have to build more once I have moved, but would like to take the ones I am about to build with me). And being a chick I am concerned with the aethestics of my panels and like the look of the felt mounted by wood. ![]() My current room height is 8' (2.4m) with L = 9' 8" and W= 7'3" (I know, why d'ya think I'm moving?!) so instead of building one massive bass trap per corner I would like to build more smaller traps to fill the same space (150 x 600 x 600mm or 6" x 2' x 2'). I will probably leave a small gap between each panel. 1. Will I achieve the same or similar desired effect as one large trap? I understand I will probably loose some trapping in the gaps but will this be a considerable amount and does the size of the gap depend of this loss? 2. Does the thickness of the timber need to be 47mm or can I go thinner? I will be making holes in the wood to allow for further absorbtion of the lower frequencies into my RS60 Rocksil (60kg/m3). Would greatly appreciate any advice on this. I am seriously grateful to all you generous advice givers. I have spent weeks scouring the web and have learned an enormous amount (esp since I didnt take physics in school )Naomi |

| exactly, you can throw them on the floor or hang them on a simple chains that you can buy in diy stores. My panels are around 9.5 kg each and they easily hang under the ceiling (used 4 cheapest hooks)

| Lives for gear | i made some more with these smaller 50x50cm frames which are made to be covered with fabric. what's cool is the frames are only £3.99 each and they don't have to look good because they're completely covered in fabric. the traps are thin but i'm using the pretty dense rockwool that i have leftover. the pics are self explanatory i reckon, excuse the mess i'm going to put them right at first reflection points to stop more direct reflections from the speaker, and i can move the bigger ikea panels (ie the one with the 'interesting' pattern) back a bit. the fabric i got from ikea is cheap but needed doubling up because it's thin. but colour wise, in person, matches the GIK 244's nearly perfectly i'm going to have 2 above mix position, on the ceiling and then 2 more on the ceiling above usual vox tracking position. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
