Home Studio Build Help!!

Hey everyone, I have been lurking on this forum for a while and finally decided to post for once.

I am currently in the process of upgrading my home studio (currently just a composing desk/post production desk). I work in big studios everyday but want to finally put some more $$$ into my home rig so I can take on more projects from my house instead of being shafted by the big studios. So here is what I currently have...

Mac Pro Quad 3.0ghz
9gb RAM
Dynaudio BM5a's
Digi 003 Rack
48 Point Patch Bay (mostly for routing my guitar effects I have connected and some keyboards)
SM57
MXL 990/991
TBone SCT800 (w/ NOS Mullard)

So as you can see, I am pretty limited...since this has mostly been a composing/sequencing studio I have only needed my soft synths, keyboards and midi trigger pads. So mostly I want to upgrade my mics, my pres, and perhaps add some compressors.

I am going to be recording bass, acoustic guitars, vocals, voice overs, electric guitars and perhaps some percussion. So I want maybe 1 or 2 great pres of different flavors (tube or solid), so a lunch box may be a great option with some 500 series modules...suggestions? I want a very clean, full sounding pre and then something with color. I am not sure if I want to get a stereo pre just yet, but the option is there....I was looking at maybe the ART GOLD with upgraded tubes as my color pre and then maybe something from the 500 series modules for my clean, full sounding pre...thoughts? For a compressor maybe a RNC or a RNL...not sure...suggestions would be great too...

As for mics go, I am def going to be getting an SM7b and some other type of LDC. I have been looking into either a 4033, 4040, 4047 or the 4050 and also the Oktava modded 319. The LDC would be used for percussion, acoustic guitars, vocals, and backing vox....what do you guys think is the most all around of those I mentioned? I also know I want to get a pair of FatHeads because I LOVE LOVE the way they sound...

Sorry for such a long first post, but I just wanted to be as thorough as possible with my questions.......so yeah, mics...pres...and compressors, that is all I am looking for right now. As for my budget I would like to keep it UNDER 3000. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Tony

Definitely any or all of the AT mics you mentioned would be a good idea, or an AKG 414 or 2...in any case, a solid vocal mic is a must. Beyond that, at least a couple channels of good pre would be nice...the Aphex 1100 is a really solid but fairly inexpensive dual channel pre with nice sounding converters built in...or something like a Mackie Onyx 440L if you need more channels but want to keep costs down.

An Aphex 207(d) and the Aphex 109 Easyrider Compressor are a nice combo. The 207 by itself may not feed an SM7 enough, so the comp will help.

The Easyrider, which is discontinued, is a great value and go on fleabay for 50-100 bux. The 207 sometimes isnt more than 150. I used to use both of them together, and still have the comp for backup. (Both are 2 channel)The 207d has convertors, the other does not. (207)

I sold the 207 to help fund buiying my Langevin DVC a few years back, but kinda wish I still had it.

How about ADK mics? The Vienna or the Hamburg...what would be better for my applications? Are they worth looking into? More so than maybe the Oktava or the AT 40 series? Thanks so far for your replies!

Also...I have found A LOT of 500 series pres that I would be interested in from the Chandler to the API's, the Shadow Hills, the Purple Audio, the Great River, the Brent Averill or the Eisen kits.....too many to choose from, which would be a better fit? Suggestions!

Thanks in advance!!!!
