room treatment. front wall first?

doing my reading up on room treatment and i am wondering if i should do the front wall first? it seems the most logical thing to do. will treating the front wall 1st bring the most noticeable results?

i would think that treating the back wall would also be important cause of the reflections hitting it.

any thoughts?

The walls closest to you will make the most noticeable difference. If you're against a wall (the front one), yes, put some absorbers there. Then look to your left, right, and ceiling. Whichever is closest next will make a good amount of difference. The back wall is USUALLY treated with diffusion, especially if it's at least 8 feet behind your head or so. This creates a nice Live end Dead end idea, which is common.

What is your room size and set up? We would need to know that before helping.

Let me correct myself (kind of but still would like room size) by saying, every area you treat is helping to solve different problems. So pick what problem you want to work on first

Bass - Go for the front corners to start
SBIR - Go for the front wall (bass traps in front corners will help with this)
Early reflections - Go for the side walls, ceiling and (if you are in a smaller room) go for the back wall.

Any of those areas are going to have noticeable problems. What will be the best place to start can only be determined by which one is the biggest problem.

Hope that helps you a little.

Well, I think it's all important but if I start one piece at a time I would go to the four corners and four walls...

but if you're limited in material... I would go to the wall facing the speakers.

Here's my treatment thread

good luck!

Go for bass trapping first and start with the front corners. Also make sure you are set up in the room correctly. see here GIK Acoustics - Education

No, that's one of the last places to worry about because your speakers face the other way.

In order of importance:

* bass trapping in the corners, including where the walls meet the ceiling (and/or floor)

* first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling

* the rear wall behind you

* anywhere else if more is still needed
