Acoustic traps - air gap depth

Hi all, I've gone the DIY route with some acoustic traps.
I'm wrapping up my first phase of this project soon and about to place my acoustic traps in my room.

I have some 4" framed OC703 and from what I've read it seems a 4 inch minimum air gap is going to give some decent results.

My question though, does one typically see better results if there is a larger [than 4"] air gap?

it depenps on the frequency range you want to absorb.

A larger gap will have more efficienz on lower frequencies.

At the wall, the air motion is zero, so you cant get anything.

At a 1/4 wavelength, the motion is max, so there you schould stop.

Lets look at 100Hz, approx. 3,4 meters (sorry, im german). 1/4 is 85 cm.

Youll get 100 Hz there....

You have to calculate your room. You need to know how much absorption you need in which frequency range and than put the materials to fit this.

One hint, try to get the deep frequencies by resonators, absoption elemts need to be to large...

Thank you for your replies.

I have read Ethan's page there. I'm not the best mathematician...but looks like I'm going to need to put my thinking cap on if I really want to do the best job possible. I'll measure the frequencies in my room and reference Ethan's work on that page to really try and target (as best as I can) the lower frequencies that I have trouble with.

I guess I was looking for the magic-pill-one-size-fits-all answer! HA!

Thanks again.
