Hey Jules,
Just curious, are you still using the SF-12 or did you move to the
Beyer M160s you spoke of?

I'm kinda in the same boat;low ceilings SF-12 on OH and
wondering if thats the best mic for my situation.

Thanks,
Pete Ruthenburg

I did move from SF12

I got the best drumsounds ever with the SF12 but in a high celinged barn!

I guess it didnt suit my studios 7ft ceiling!

Sad to loose it... I found it good for percussion and Acc gtr too.. But I was / am / is tight for money!

So yes - using Beyer M160's in ORTF position now..

I think the thick carpet helps floor-celing reflection too..

Jules

P.S I'm lovin my Royer 121 on gtrs & want another one, if I did have 2 - I would try em out on overheads too!

Space is precious and built in acoustic treatment with angled walls takes up a lot of real estate.
Would I be better off taking care of the acoustics as a part of the construction (built in) or use modular panels such as “Real Traps” and/or homemade traps after the walls are built? ...Both effectiveness and cost wise?
I did create some odd angles in this room, but I couldnt do TOO much. So the Real Traps helped me tame 2 basically square-ish box sized rooms..

I dont know enough about your room dimentions or accoustics to comment with any real authority. Why not make a drawing and post it up as an atachment in a new thread asking for advice?

I don't know how you'll find room to build treatment into the walls with only 9 x 12 x 8 feet to work with. Better is to plan on having traps straddling as many corners as you can manage. The ceiling corners are great because they're up and out of the way. But you'll do best if you put some traps across the regular wall-wall corners too.
