Thread Starter | Auralex or GIK Acoustic Panels for treating room
I have $300 to spend. Your thoughts (If you have any).

Spend your money on the nicer GIK stuff. Foam doesn't do anything for lower frequencies.

For $300, I would build panels, simply because you could get more for your money. Otherwise, I would go GIK, but never auralex.

Second that. A room I used to work in was poorly designed and the idiots dropped THOUSANDS into Auralex crap, very little difference in response. GIK is less sexy looking but, having great sounding albums is really where it's at. I have a pair of their fatter traps up at home right now and the difference was night and day. Call them up- they're swell guys, and they'll happily talk to you about treatment options. BTW, I've done some DIY traps in the past for other rooms, and after discovering GIK's prices and quality, I'll never go back. Still trying to get insulation out of that one sweater... tutt |

I would give auralex the thumbs down also. Stupidly expensive. I just looked at the GIK panels and they look nice, but again, you can build them yourself for cheaper if you have an afternoon to kill. Cheers A |

| I have heard, great, awesome, helpful and many others, but never “swell”. thumbsup You made may day sir!! And thanks to the others for the kind words. kirkjoe: Not sure how far $300.00 will get you, but if you would like email me some pictures of your room and lets see what we can come up with. I have plenty of customers who do things in phases, but the point is it is good to see you are heading in the right direction and getting your room under control. Which ever way you go. Glenn

My vote goes for GIK, I regularly recommend it over Auralex for many reasons. War |

I've built my own panels- and recently bought some GIK corner traps and 244 panels. Buying the materials and doing it yourself is fun- but if I am totally honest with myself my home made traps do not perform as well as the GIK traps. Also as far as cost goes- when you buy the materials yourself you won't be buying in large enough quantities to get any discount. I'm guessing GIK do- I don't really know how they do them that cheaply. The build quality is not 100% perfect- you do see some seams on the top and bottom of the trap- but for me this small cosmetic flaw is forgivable. I'm about to put a couple of clouds in my mix room- I have some 703 left over from the studio build but I'm going to get some GIK 242 panels and put them up there. It's just less of a headache and I can get back to work. +1 for GIK I have a bunch of foam panels for sale very cheap if someone wants to come and pick them up from Northern NJ. I won't be using them.

Just FYI, I built 18 traps and covered them for just a tad over $200. If I didn't have the time and had a little more cash I wouldn't hesitate to get them from GIK though. I bought twin size bed sheets (the cheapest shit low count I could find at walmart for $2.59 each) to cover my traps with. After cutting off the excess and making the seems nice and neat it only took me about 4-5 hours with beer breaks in between. I hung them with fishing line and eye hooks. Trust me, once you get some traps you'll want more and more.... |

just for clarification, are we talking about bass trapping only or all applications? because the auralex absorptive sheets i have in my CR are doing their job, just like the realtraps and GIK bass traps are doing theirs.

+1 on Gik. Although if you have dough to spare RealTraps are the luxe option. Gik is a bargain and Realtraps are fairly priced. Even so, I had some old 1.5" Ilford Sonex around. I found that my room still had a bit too much ringing in high frequencies (I only got 7 Gik panels...four corners with 4" and then reflection points with 2") and I stuck the sonex back up in non-critical spots. Helped a lot, even if it doesn't look as nice. |

BIG plus ONE for Glenn! I even have 2 244's freestanding on top of each other! (people ask me if they are speaker cabs HAHA) Auralex makes pretty designs, and are great to pin lyrics to with a needle. You can use Auralex needles, 18 bux each. |
