Product Review - Gik Acoustics

I'm a newbie to the gearslutz board and this is my first review of a recent purchase. I'll try to keep it short and simple.

I recently bought some acoustic panels from Gik Acoustics (www.gikacoustics.com). I needed to treat the walls in my spare bedroom. That is where I record and mix. Previously, I noticed that my mixes did not translate well to other systems. Mainly, my reverbs and bass settings were out of wack. After doing research online I became educated of the importance to prevent sound from bouncing around and canceling/amplifying within my room. I decided to buy 5 panels from Gik. I can't believe the different that the 5 panels made. It was the best $300+ I spent in a long long time.

This article is extremely educational: http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html

Treating your walls is very easy. Don't buy new monitors or a new mic. Treat your room. I was very happy with the complete package from Gik. The price was great, the product was excellent and the customer service was outstanding. Glenn answered my emails within hours...if not minutes. I am not associated with anyone at Gik and I don't sell any type of products. I simply found a product that is worth talking about. The best part is that I found it here on gearslutz.

Let me know if you want to know more about my set-up. I'm happy to share.

I bought some of these last year and I agree with you. They are the best value in acoustic treament I found out there short of making your own.

I bought some GIK panels recently, too, and am very pleased with them. Glenn was great to deal with.

Thumbs up

Glen and Brian (anthony too) were a great help doing my entire studio. Can't say enough good things about them.

I bought 2 boxes which included 5 panels in total.

1 box (includes 3) 242 panels
1 box (includes 2) 244's

I placed the thinner 242s at my first reflection points on the sides & back. Then I placed the thicker 244s strategically to absorb both highs and lows.

I need 2 bass traps but I want to give myself some mix time with my current treatments while I save up for them.

Glenn,

It's my pleasure. Word of mouth is the best way to promote things.

Did you know that statistically a satisfied customer will only tell 2 other people about a positive purchase while an unsatisfied customer will tell 10 friends how bad the experience was. When I come across a good product I love sharing it.

Andrew,

Your discography list off your web site makes my mouth water.. You have worked with Ben Folds? That is one guy that has always impressed me with his records/song writing.

Happy GIK customer.

Frank, Bryan, and Glenn were friendly and very helpful in setting up my room. You'd be hard pressed to find better bass traps at these prices... real hard pressed... And as a testament to their build quality.. I will admit that one of my bass traps has taken 6 falls from the ceiling, I kid you not, and you wouldn't be able to tell without vigorous inspection.

**How did this particular trap fall so many times? Let's just say I was in the midst of repairing a window, I live by the beach, and sometimes, we get some heavy gusts of wind. I thought I had secured the trap good enough... 6 times lol... but I guess not. In other news, the window is fixed and those days are behind me!

I think I will buy the gik 244 bass traps, my only problem is that I can stick them on the wall as where I live is prohibited.
How bad would it be to place them near the wall? I guess they are thick enough to stand on their own.
I know they sell stands to but in Europe they only got the most expensive one and I can't afford them.

If you have the bass traps 4 to 6 inches off the wall they actually work better than if you have them against the wall. I may be wrong but I think I read that on a gik acoustics news letter.

They probably are thick enough to stand on their own but they would probably fall over very easily. Best would be to get stands I think.

Well but if i place them on the wall in Thr corners they will only touch the wall on the sides, so there it would be' a distance between them And the wall, wouldn't it?
But yeah they will foll easily...
Any one knows where to' get any cheap stands?
I love yo buy the stands gik has for i think $12 but they Are only avaliable in usa, whata shame...

I also have to give high praise for GIK Acoustics. Years ago I started with the Auralex foam panels, and lenrds. From there I started a relationship with Glenn and I purchased many of this panels, stands and bass traps. It may a huge difference in my studio and Glenn and his crew were very helpful.

I just put up about 25 of the various GIK panels, some custom modified, and couldn't be happier with the sonic results. For the most part , just plan on needing way more panels than you think. This is the great thing about GIK--they're affordable and reasonably good looking, especially if you go for the custom Guilford fabric. You won't find the perfectly square corners and neatly pressed fabric look of the more expensive competitors like Primacoustic or Real Traps, but this price/quality point worked for me and I can't imagine getting anything better sonically for the money--or any price, really.

great to hear all these succesful stories ...

what I would like to know is:

why to put thinner pannels (GIK 242) for side absorption?

Why not simply put monster bass traps everywhere (corners and
first reflection points)? I looked at the specs and it seems that
monsters will excell in performance over the entire frequency range (< 5000 Hz).

If money doesn't matter so much, of course.
