Thread Starter | Need Acoustic For the Studio
Thinking of buying a Martin D15 or 00015 mainly 'cos I like the dark character of the mahogony, anybody got any opinions on this? Any help would be appreciated.... Jock

Nice guitar for the money. Plays very evenly and IMHO records well. I like mahogony guitars. I've got a 2-17 Martin that sounds great for Americana style stuff.

I'm looking for an acoustic for the studio as well. I played a Larrivee the other day and fell in love with it...Very well balenced and played like a dream. I have to get it now. http://www.larrivee.com/flash/produc...-03R/d03r.html Good Luck, Brian

I went on a BIG search before I bought my studio acoustic. Unfortunately I read more than I played . the 2 i played a lot was the Gibson songwriter and the Martin hd-28. The "specs" on the HD-28 were inpressive and it felt nice so when I found a deal I jumped on it. I'm not blown away by it. It's got no spank to it, and although the neck is comfy the rest leaves a little to be desired. The Gibson was my runner up. . . would be the firrst thing I would look at again. . . . fwiw Takamine's record really well imo. |

Hi I work with a guy who records a lot of country records and a lot of acoustic guitars. He uses a session player who's guitar collection is scary. He's got everything known to man. Funny thing is, the best guitar sound we have ever gotten is from a Larivee L-02. Not made any more but you can get a L-03. It is a smaller body, designed by Larivee akin to the 14 series Taylors. Has an amazing balanced sound with sweet highs and a huge bottom that isn't boomy. Check one out if you can. |

I spent several weeks playing every guitar I could get my hands on and agree that the Larivee put many much more expensive guitars to shame. The tone, playability and understated beauty of these guitars is remarkable.

I'd favour the OOO-15 over the D-15 for recording, but only because I'd favour any OOO over any D for recording. The OOO-15 will be balanced and clear. It won't have the compexity of a spruce/rosewood guitar, but that's not necessarily any loss, depending on the material.

I'm holding off until I can find the perfect Baritone Acoustic for mic'd recording. As for standard acoustics. I played every acoustic I could get my hands on trying to find anything that sounded remotely as good as my friend's '34 Martin. Even the $3,500 new Martin's and Taylors didn't impress me. The Larrivee's overall sounded and played better than anything else I found. I'm still totally confused on who makes the best electronics for the electric acoustics, because nothing seems to sound as good as a mic'd guitar to me. I'm thinking it may be better to have a passive PU rather than active electronics, but then what for live performances? |

we got tons of acoustic guitars in the studio: HD-28, j-45, j-185, 69 alvarez, breedlove focus... Then we have this old beat yo martin dx1 or something. I can't remember the model number, but my bandmate bought it from some dude for $100. It's cracked, chipped, all beat up, but it's my go to guitar for recording. Maybe it's a fluke but that thing sounds so damn good

i'll second (third?) the Martin D-15 for recording. It's a great sounding guitar, mellow lows (read: not boomy) with a nice, balanced top end. i love the acoustic tone of my buddy's HD28V.....but recorded? not so much. cheers, wade |

For recording, an original John D'Angelico guitar is exceptional, as is an original Jimmy D'Aquisto instrument (though they're much more expensive); they record beautifully - lovely balance of tone and articulation. An original John D'Angelico Style A that has been refinished can be had for under 10k - not inexpensive, but infinitely effective.

I played a bunch of Larrivee's this week and I'm having a terrible time deciding. I fell in love with the limited edition Parlor guitar special edition in gloss rosewood with the inlay, but that's $1,400.00 and I'm not sure how the smaller parlor guitar might record. The easiest playing guitar for me was the OM series and for warmth, the SD-60 was outstanding. I didn't see a D-03, but I'll have to try one next time I'm there. The mahogany and rosewood L-03's played nice, but I wasn't blown away. That parlor model really has my interest, but again, I have no idea how that smaller form factor might sound recorded. It's clear and clean, but no where near as warm as the SD-60. $1,500 is pretty much pushing the limits of my budget. |
