Old old old old banjo.

I've got an old banjo handed down to down to me from my grandfather in the keys always come to turn back when you tune it there anyway to fix this easily or somethin I need to take to a professional? It hasn't been played in about 100 years so I didn't know if they used to skuff their tuning keys or oil them? I just want to play this thing, it sounds awesome.

I'm guessing the tuners are just getting old and tired. You could probably get someone to tighten them up. Would need to see pics of them to figure out if that's something you can do yourself, however.

It might however be just as easy to just get a new set of tuners that fit without any extra holes added, and just keep the old ones laying around for mojo.

Friction pegs try something like peg drops

Metal tuning gears try some dry lube, but most likely they'll need to be removed and disassembled, cleaned really well and then put back on, then dry lubed.

These are friction pegs. What is that stuff you are talking about? An oil?
