Vintage 1974 Guild D-35 for recording?

Hey all,

I'm looking to lay down some real earthy acoustic folk tracks and I came across someone selling a vintage 1974 Westerly-built Guild D-35 acoustic guitar with solid spruce top and solid mahogany sides. It is in great condition with the original hardshell case. They are offering $550 but said they are negotiable and I think I should be able to haggle it down to $450 or at least $500. It may be in need of a neck reset soon which may cost another $300-$400 but it seems like it could be worth the investment.

Has anyone had any experience playing or recording these guitars, and is this a good deal?

Thanks!

I have a mid-70s D-25 that records very well. I have to eq out some boom at times, but it has a really nice sound.

These things are always on a case by case basis, as workmanship and wood and how the guitar was aged are important, one might be a dud the next might be a real gem.

However, i wouldn't hesitate giving an early 70's guild a whirl, there can be some great value buys.

Having said that, the most important thing first would be if you are definitely after a dread sound for the type of earthy folk you are looking for.

If not, hard to get past that point regardless of the desirability or value in a vintage guitar.
