unused but rusted B&E strings... still ok?

i have about 20 sets of markley strings that are shrunk wrapped, were stored properly but being about 8 years old have developed black rough spots on part of the plain strings. Not gonna lie, some spots are like a cm. in size.

Put them on and its not the end of the world... they sound better than the 8 month old strings they replaced. Been playing 40 years... i'm not proud.

So what can i put on them to stop the corrosion and maybe remove some of whats there? The bronze wrapped ones look and sound fine. Seems to me like grease is a bigger tone killer.
With 6 guitars to feed and my job not getting lots of hours i'm gonna use 'em. Any of you others been down this road? I mean, lots of records must have been made with crusty B&E's back in the day dont you think?
