For those who found they had to drive it too hard to get it to trigger, did you try switching that one switch to "sensitrig" ? That always fixed that for me. You could also run a midi cable from your synth and use that to trigger it (or cv).
I agree that the layout seems a little commplex. I can see why he did it, but the hp/lp/bp balance knob and compensation knob are a little bit difficult for me to get my head around. I would have an easier time with it if they each had their own volume knob. It does, however, allow you to do some stuff you couldn't do with the simpler layout.
