The way I see it, If you're in a room, watching a drummer play the drums without any mics to screw it up, the kit really isn't big enough to give you much of a stereo image...if you close your eyes, the drums just sound like they're in front of you, right? You sure as hell don't hear the floor tom with your left ear only.
But if you sit and play the drums, the hat is all the way over on the left, the floor tom on the right, etc... SO, the only way I can justify panning drums (to myself) is from the drummer's perspective.
plus, like someone said before, you can't airdrum to the audience perspective.
...and if the drummer is left handed? well they have no business playing the drums anyway
