There are a tons of good drum loop series out there. I work in Pro Tools so it's pretty easy for me to change tempos in a loop based production. One thing I have tried is programming the drums and then having a drummer play the cymbals. Drum programming is a seriously tedious ordeal. Sometimes it can be a complete nightmare.
There are also some instruments you can buy like BFD, Strike, and I'm sure other ones as well. Good luck.
