You don't need a hat mic. Save the cash or get something for the room instead. In the last 5 years I've put up a hat mic three times. Once at gunpoint and twice because the hats were so far off axis from my overheads that I needed it. I should point out that it was the same drummer both times and the gun was an isolated incident.

Still didn't need it in the actual mix though.


Don't think about the C1000's for anything they're pretty crappy mics. Get the Oktava MC012's or Shure Beta Green 4.0 or whatever they're called now, ATM33's are also great for the same kinda cost. I'm not a huge D112 fan but they work. SM57's on the snare and toms and you should be good to go. I could talk about other choices for hours, ATM23's for sn and toms, Audix D series etc. None of them suck, it's just slightly different from one to another and the drum and drummer are still the biggest variable in the sound.
