There is nothing lacking in the component quality or the topology of the Folcrom. I'm not trying to brag, but it works and is built very well. The reason it's relatively inexpensive has nothing to do with compromises on the construction. It's just an elegantly simple device. In my opinion, there's nothing more needed and there would be no real benefit to getting any more esoteric with the component selection.

The shadow hills stuff appears to be very well built too, and they're going for a particular aesthetic that probably affects the price substantially. Their stuff has a very cool look and feel (I haven't heard it). But I don't think putting bakelite knobs and magic eye tubes on the Folcrom would make it sound any better.
