Well. Ok. Here it goes in short form. I have a blue stripe rev b that sounds unlike any other 1176 I have ever used. It is just fantastic and I will probably have my kids put it in my coffin when I die. It is priceless to ME. I also have a Purple Audio MC-76 that sounds almost exactly like the rev D black face 1176 pair that I used to have. (The same pair now resides in a local studio and have never been recapped and to me sound like total shit now. See my earlier post above) I also have a Universal Audio 2-1176 and to finally answer your question it sounds very similar to the Rev g/h silver 1176's that your are asking about. It is a bit smoother than the older Silver/Red button units. If it were me I would probably buy a new reissue over a silver/red button unit just because of the age. The great thing is there are plenty of people around who can fix these units and are quite reputable.

The silver 1176's and the 1178 used to be quite inexpensive on ebay but now pretty much all 1176 compressors are going for top dollar.

Good luck,
Michael Greene
