With nodes you can basically hook up another Mac to your main Logic machine by ethernet - Logic can utilise the CPU power of the second machine (the 'node') for Logic's plugins. Note: this only works with Logic's plugins, not 3rd party ones.
The node software is on one of the Logic installer discs. I haven't used it myself but I believe that when it's installed you can then specify in Logic whether to use the onboard CPU to power a plugin, or the node CPU.
