If you want to know what they sound like, you can get free impulse responses from www.noisevault.com. With a convolution reverb, like the freeware SIR, you can hear for yourself on your own source material.

Bear in mind that impulse responses are static samples, so they don't capture the modulation and random aspects. They also tend to be slightly truncated. But basically they give you 95% of the sound of the real thing. If you love the sound, the real thing can only get better. If you hate it, it isn't going to change much.

If you can't get your hands on the real thing, I don't know of a better way to get some understanding of how they sound like. Audio samples are useless.
