If anything it's always been fashionable to swoon over them. I think they impart a slightly nasal, smaller than life tonality, which actually can help to fit a track into the big picture if that's the approach you're taking. I always think stuff sounds better without them, but I think I'm in the minority, this thread notwithstanding.
