Yep the 3.5mm input on the back of the H4n is mic level where as on the Marantz it is line level.
Different manufactures want to do the thing that is most suitable to them so there isn't a common standard. Even Sony and Sennheiser which use the same sort of plug on their radio mic systems are wired differently. So often sony cables / mics won't work in Sennheiser transmitters etc.
