We've been working on the song as a band and we tried reducing the number of modulations a bit (took out the one in the second chorus) but the chorus dies a bit when we do that. The other thing we've done is start it just with single voice and guitar, and then let it build up into the second verse/chorus, and then there's some nice ripping bluesy lead work in the bridge before it all comes back for the final chorus.
I was having a lush pop moment when I recorded that demo but it's funny how much songs change once the band gets a hold of them.
