I routinely wrestle with my 1993 810 for that very reason. A star when I jam with friends, but poses real problems when recording. I often string it with Silk & Steel, and find it a nice match. I've also come back to Elixers (as per Taylor spec). Still a bright guitar, but it is a touch less toppy. They seem to take out a bit of the top and slightly soften the attack.
