Bah, thread full of disinformation.
Get yourself a good software phase/spectrum analyzer. You're mix isn't translating because you're mixing to the speakers and what you think is good, not specification. Read the specifications of your monitors and all of the equipment you have to see the freq response curves, etc.
I think that using ears is HELPFUL, but it's not a catch all. It's all about getting what you can get away with sonically and what sounds good, but also staying within specification and a LOT of people miss that part. If you don't know what frequencies are peaking, even though you can't hear it what good is the mix?
