Nearly impossible to answer because it totally depends on application, so let my break my options down:
PCM 42 : Simple assed mono delay. Great to put on the left side of a "strings" bus (with zero feedback) with a couple ms delay to add width.
Moogerfooger Analog Delay : SLY AND ROBBIE 2000 dub bay-bay!!! Anyone ever notice the plug in version of this is NOT accurate when you put a delay time in? This is more of an instrument to me than a delay, LOVE IT.
AMS RMX : Dude, come on. I love it when "daw engineers" ask me what these units to. The con of using these is I hit a streak of bad luck where 5 units (in different studios) crapped out on me. Times like that, you ask yourself if it was something YOU did.
2290 : My staple. Preset 80, 0 direct signal, usually a quarter note delay, Feedback 20 or so. Sometimes I feed this to itself. (Bob Brown is a MASTER at this) I flip the left side out of phase a lot (because of the programs). The "learn" function is used even if the unit isn't. These are also CHEAPER than 42's and do more now-a-days.
Roland Space Echo : This is another unit that is more musical to me. I feel like I'm playing it. Cons are that they are hard to find.
Echoplex : Man. Eddie Van Halen? Dead Kennedys? come on now. I love using this unit for a rip off of "the edge" (u2) guitar sound. The TUBE versions of this are the way to go. Every unit sounds different depending on the tape, but you'll know it's an echoplex when you hear it.
Roland SDE3000 : Simple. Does the trick. Sometimes I send this to an autopanner (fast auto pan) with a little HPF and LPF on it.
MRX Blue : Make sure it's the blue. Great results on guitar, or bass should you ever desire delay on your bass.
TC D-TWO : Radically new delay. This is still considered an "unknown" to most engineers I talk to. Man, the Multi tap pattern function is on some next level. You can make it delay actual rhythms, not just set divisions. This allows you to ponder new ways of using a delay. The Ping Pong delay is also great.
Lexicon 95 Prime Time II : Reminds me of the 80's too much in a bad way. It's kinda cool for flanging, but I usually prefer other flangers than just a delay that shifts.
TC1210 Spatial Expander : I love this as an effects send from my background chain.
Yamaha D5000 : I didn't get much time with this unit, but most people I talked to used this as a reverb. (?) I never understood this. Anyway, the "freeze" function is pretty dammed cool at anyrate. There's also some timecode dealeydally I never understood. Dammit. Now I'm gonna have to rent one.
Boss DM-2 Analog Delay : Classic. Simple. Non-clean. Love it on guitar.
Cellphone Delay : Yeah, this pisses me off too. I usually just hang up.
