Mike Dean said this on Pensado's Place (about using a pultec on 808s)...

Dave: Do you EQ your 808s as a tendency or just turn them up louder?
Mike: Yeah I just put it on 60Hz and turn it up to 10. That's like my standard.
Dave: Any compression on those?
Mike: Nah. I never compress drums at all. Not as a singular thing, you know what I mean?
Dave: Uh-huh.
Mike: I compress groups of drums.
Dave: Yeah.
Mike: I compress the main mix. You know, the 2-mix.

he ain't from the def jam era, but I think the pultec has been around for awhile, maybe they used it back then too? steve ett or somebody needs to write a book on how they mixed licensed to ill... and donovan dirt biker needs to do one on straight outta compton too

here's a free plugin that has a pultec-like function KVR: SonEQ by Sonimus - Details
