Sounds like mayhaps some setting for line level was inadvertently jumbled on your machine? I've recorded stuff with cables that shrink 1/4" down to the stereo 1/8" input on the top, no problem.
And the case thing? It fits perfectly into recloseable sandwich bags, the sleekest, sheerest cases alive!
