Yes the Prophet VS has magic. And if you're after that specific sound, then let's not fool ourselves, there's no alternative. Best would be to try one.
Yes, I owned a Microwave XT, ESQ-1 and a Wavestation before I bought my VS. I could almost get the crunch/filter sound out of the ESQ, but it's rather static and has no unison stacking. I could get the movement and complex waves out of the Wavestation, but it lacked the crunch and the filter. I could get the crunch and movement out of the Microwave, but the awesome digital filter on the XT is no match for the real thing.

After I got the VS I sold the Wavestation and the ESQ. Kept the XT.

My old DX7 IIFD can be very "VS like" when it comes to the harsh waves.
