I think this is overstated. the modern 808 sound, sounds like sampled 808 snares and kicks, imo. I have an 808 and I sampled most of the sounds into my MPC.
My sampled 808s sound pretty much like the real one and are very similar to the samples you will hear in any commercial rap song.
