| I've never needed the pads on the 4011s. You do have to excersize the switches once in awhile though. The switches make intermittent noise if they're not moved occassionally.
I love these mics - among the best-sounding cardioids!!! Off-axis pickup is relatively uncolored, so they blend well with omnis.
